Survivor Island Day

Novel Study
Monday September the 18th room 4 and some of  room 3 did a survival day. First thing in the morning we brought all our stuff in but we were only allowed to have 10 things between everyone in our team and we had 5 people in our team so we brought two things each but in the morning we got to collect points by doing maths and Ixl then we traded in the points for anything that we didn't have but we needed. When we got all the stuff we needed we set out and picked a small square for our team that have already marked out for us, then we started to build our fire which we had to keep going the whole time so we could cook our lunch. Then we had to make a TP that fit all of our team in it and kept us warm and dry and then at the end Miss Spittle tipped a bucket of water of our TP while we were in it to see if it worked. After that we had to make a stretcher for the injured person because we had to fall out of a plane to get on the island and one of our team mates had to get injured, then after we made the stretcher we had to carry the injured person to the fence and back. In my team we had Emma, Carey, Thomas, Caitlin and I.
I learnt how to make a decent stretcher with just a sheet and some sticks. We cooked on our fire; marshmallows, chocolate fingers, chicken balls, bacon and sausages. I enjoyed making the fire and keeping it going the whole time.

Novel Study Memoir Poem

Today we were working on our second memoir poem for our novel study. Our success criteria was to be really descriptive and make sure that our adjectives and nouns were more than one syllable. To plan this we had to use an ANV (Adjective, Noun, Verb) chart.

Memoir Poem
The concentration camp was rough enough.
The smoke smelt horrendous, the fence was towering and the food here was basically crumbs.
The powerful creek was streaming and the rusty dirt was crumbling.
The barbed fence was soaring above us.
Weakening jews were stumbling and cruel Nazis were beating the innocent.
Cold-blooded soldiers were gassing.
Weak. Depressed. Scared

Scared for my life.

Novel Study Memoir Poem

Today the class was working on writing a poem on our novel study, I had to do it on my book ´The Boy In Striped Pajamas.´ We did most of the sentences with an ANV (Adjective,Noun,Verb) chart. We had to put a picture in the readers mind of what was actually happening. We had to describe the scene and the situation.

Memoir Poem

The new house was significant enough, it had dull concrete walls, a tedious oak tree and a tiny yard.
Hopeless case Gretel was wondering up and down the halls.
The tiresome trees were swaying and there were weak jews wandering in the camp.
There were scary soldiers marching all around the house and dreadful Hitler was gassing. Brainwashed Nazis were banishing the innocent.
Scared. Confused. Worried.
Terrified for my life.

Novel Study 100 Word Challenge #2

This week I was working on my second 100 Word challenge for the next 3 chapters on my novel study. Something I was working on was creating a picture in the readers mind and keeping it to only 100 words.

100 Word Challenge
Chapters 4-6

It was the second day at our new home and I was arranging my dolls on my shelves all around the room when Bruno rushed through the door yelling my name. ¨Do you ever knock? Bruno!¨ I yelled in frustration. ¨You have to come see this Gretel!¨ I followed him down the hallway where he was walking slowly down to the small narrow window inside his room. I took a look outside the window but all I saw was trees then in the distance where Bruno was pointing to was a little farm and there were lots of people were running around but they were all boys and there were no girls at all.

Novel Study 100 Word Challenge

This week we started our novel study and the first thing we had to do was write a 100 Word Challenge for the first 3 chapters of our book. My book that I´m reading is ´The Boy In Striped Pajamas.´

100 Word Challenge
Chapters 1-3

The year was 1943 and I had just arrived back from school Maria was in my room snatching all my things from my wardrobe and shoving them into a huge suitcase. I was really confused, why was she packing up my room? Are we going somewhere? I didn't know what to do.  Mother said we're moving. Then the next day we loaded all of our things into a big truck and we followed it to our new place. It was smaller than our home back in Berlin and it was really boring it didn't have anything special about it, it was just concrete.

Holidays

Holidays
This morning, we wrote 5 basic sentences about our holidays. We looked at a range of different connectives that will improve our writing. A connective is a word that joins simple sentences , e.g. such as, never the less, in spite of etc. next we spent time improving out 5 basic sentences by using connectives. Do you use connectives? If so, which ones?

For the first week of the holidays I lazily lay on the couch most of the time watching netflix.
Nearly everyday we jumped in the car and traveled to Invercargill to see my Poppa because he was in hospital.
Despite the bad weather my mum, my brother and I still went to kidzone for the day.
For a couple days I stayed in a house that my aunty was renting in Invercargill and since it was cold my cousins and I tried to light the fire but nearly burnt the whole house down.
Near the end of the holidays we took a trip to town to watch the new spiderman movie with my cousins while eating lots of lollies and popcorn.

First Aid DLO

After our session with Felicia from St John's in Schools we realized we had learnt a lot. We thought...how can we share what we have learnt? So we brainstormed lots of ideas...from making movies to presentations to art projects. Eventually we split into groups and decided what we want to create.
My group was Emma,Carey,Khali and I and we decided to create a movie to share our learning.

Digital Dig

Digital Dig
The past couple weeks I have been working on my digi dig which is a slide that we have to complete and it teaches you some tips and small things like shortcuts you can use which using a Chromebook. I was working on getting it done in a short amount of time because I was away for a week at technology.

Novel Study

For the past couple week Room 4 have been working on our novel study's. We had to do it about a book we have already read and I did Wonder by R.J Palacio. For this I was working on layering my questions with big paragraphs so my answers were clear and people could understand them.

100 Word Challenge

100 Word Challenge
This week for the 100WC I had to work on changing the opening and using good vocab and using level four punctuation. This week our prompt was ´now what do I need?´

The Milky White Chocolate
The mother of all foods; the best thing I have tasted in my life is sitting right in front of me; just waiting to be dropped in my basket. Its screaming my name, it wants me I can hear it clearly. But Mum told me to just get some things for her, now what do I need? Yes that's right I need: bacon, eggs, milk, flour and that's right that amazing block of Milky White chocolate right in front of my eyes!  Snatching it from the shelf I chucked it in my basket and rushed to the checkout.
So easy.

Lions Maths

Lions Maths
For the past 3 weeks our maths has been focused on the Lions rugby team and we had to plan a 40 day trip to New Zealand from a chosen place from where the Lions came from. My favorite part was working the entertainment and where to go.

100 Word Challenge

100 Word Challenge
This week for the 100WC we had to write about a small sentence that was ´The weather changed dramatically.' Our focus was using good vocab and adding semi colons. I had to work mostly on my vocab and I think that I used it very well in this story.

We were all having an amazing time outside; the sun was shining and the birds were chirping and we have having the best time. But then out of nowhere the weather changed dramatically, the sun went away behind the clouds and the bright blue sky turned into a dark grey colour and it starting raining out of nowhere. We quickly sprinted outside and the thunder and lightning came fast! I was watching the flashes of lightning strike outside. I could hear the thunder banging and crashing on the roof; the trees were grumbling and growling and the dogs were barking.

Speechboard

Speech Board

Every year at Drummond School we have Speech board and we have to pick a subject based on the inquiry topic. Speech board helps us with our oral language skills (speaking and listening). We have to write a speech then get bullet points off it and put them on a google slide with lots of pictures, then we have to write a poem and learn it off by heart, we also have to get a blurb out of a book and it has to be 100 words, last we have to do an impromptu speech which could be a welcome or a thank you but the juniors had to answer a fake phone call.

The most challenging thing would be learning the poem and doing the impromptu speech because it was hard practising it when you didn’t know what it was going to be. If I was to do it again I would get more practise and try to get a higher mark. There is Fail which is the lowest then: Pass, Commended, Highly Commended and Distinction.

My topic was the Hector's Dolphin, my book was ‘Wonder’ by R.J. Palacio and I wrote a poem called ‘That was the Holidays’. Then I had to thank a Hector's Dolphin expert that came to share their knowledge with the school.

100 Word Challenge

This week I was working on my word choice. How do you think mine is this week?

Creme Egg Explosion

The Creamy sensation leaking from its milk chocolate shell. The workers surrounding it ankle deep in goo trying to keep it from escaping. They Lay out the red road cones to keep it from spreading, while panicking and moving as fast as they can. The chocolate substance melting all over the road from the burning sun. Worker one investigates the creamy yolky texture while worker two and three work on keeping it from spreading and melting. Bits of shredded core of chocolate burning in the sunlight. “This isn't working it just keeps on spreading in the sun.”

100 Word Challenge

Every Monday we have a new creative writing challenge called the 100 world challenge. I enjoyed doing this because it was fun writing a story with only 100 words. I think that its a good writing challenge because it really helps if you have not enough words then when you edit you could make it better. The weeks Prompt was "The water just kept gushing out."

“The water just kept gushing out.” Billy explained as he tried to clog up the pipe with an old rag he found on the ground. “Billy we have been trapped in this old janitor's closet for hours now and there is no way out and the pipe has broke, we’re ankle deep in water we’re gonna drown and there's nothing we can do.” Jimmy yelled. “We need to keep trying to get out of this water I’m not gonna die in here we have so much to live for, we are going to clog up this pipe and get out!”

About Me

This week Miss Blair introduced us to a site called piktochart and since then we have been working on it everyday. This is our first post and our first time making a piktochart about ourselves.
